ABOUT ZEBRAS IN MOTION
Zebras In Motion was founded to raise awareness for Amyloidosis, a rare disease. In medicine, doctors are trained to look for horses—the common conditions—first. Only after ruling out the obvious do they consider the “zebra,” the rare cases. Unfortunately, not everyone finds a doctor who recognizes these rare diseases in time.
Our sister Charmaine, an avid lifelong runner, lost her battle with Amyloidosis in 2019. She first noticed something was wrong after a race in the D.C. area. By the time she received a correct diagnosis, the disease had progressed too far. Charmaine wasn’t able to outrun it. Charmaine and her identical twin sister, Elaine, shared a love of running and dreamed of creating a race to raise awareness for Amyloidosis and support those affected by it.
Zebras In Motion exists to honor Charmaine’s memory, her passion for running, and her dedication to health and wellness. Our mission is to raise awareness, educate the public, and support the research and resources that make early diagnosis and treatment possible.

AMYLOIDOSIS IS OUR CAUSE
Amyloidosis is a term used to describe several rare diseases in which an abnormal protein, called amyloid, is produced in the body. These amyloid protein fibers can attach to and deposit in organs, tissues, nerves, and other areas, disrupting normal function.
As amyloid builds up, it can lead to serious health complications and progressive organ damage. The word “osis” means an increased or abnormal condition—reflecting the excessive buildup of amyloid protein that defines this disease.
